The equity-centered participatory design principles outlined below have come from being a part of work in and with communities. They are the anchors that allow us to come back to the center. These principles also allow us to live on the edges of what some would deem as acceptable ways of being.
Everyone can be a designer for a more equitable future. But, to make this happen, we need to make sure that this is possible; we must ensure that we create and continue to make space for everyone to belong. This is done first and foremost by recognizing how systemic oppression silences those living at the margins of our society. Then, as a co-design team, we must recognize and shift away from these systems by consistently questioning who has power, who is missing in the space, and how we ensure they are invited, amplified, and appreciated.
Our work at LEC is to be a guide on the side, not a sage on the stage.” That said, from the beginning, we make it clear that the work is crafted when we partner, not because of our presence. Yes, we love to be in thought partnership. However, the co-designers know the community more holistically. It is the group that has shared ownership and must lead the way.
Rushing to a deadline kills creativity. Our belief in Lyons Educational Consulting is that the time it takes to gather community and move through the design process must be as important as the finished program. We must consider the benefits of what it means to our time.
We are not ever starting with a clean slate in our co-design work. The communities, spaces, and places we work within have a history we must honor. Therefore, accounts of our past must be considered when co-designing.
